Discover the History of Regents Park

Originally part of the Great Middlesex Forest, the area now known as Regent’s Park was owned by Barking Abbey until the Dissolution, when it was appropriated by Henry VIII and became a royal hunting ground. After the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell stripped the land of trees to pay for his New Model Army and the open land became small holdings. At the Restoration, Charles II took back the park for the Crown in whose possession it has remained ever since. It was King George lll in 1760 who initiated the development, continued by his son The Prince Regent, that created the park we see today.
